Club VHS opent haar deuren: Amsterdam heeft weer een videotheek

Have you spotted it yet? That tiny building next to the bridge, right at the entrance of the Garden? That’s the Brughuisje. And something new has moved in: Club VHS. The one and only videostore in Amsterdam. Yes, really. A videostore. With DVDs. Lots and lots of DVDs.

In July and August, the videostore is already quietly open. On Thursday and Friday afternoons, you're welcome to come browse the collection. But on Thursday 14 August, we celebrate the official Grand Opening. With an outdoor film, a drink on the house, and of course: endless browsing through unstreamable gems.

Club VHS was founded by Ismay and Eli, two film lovers who couldn’t let go of the magic of physical media. Let’s be honest: endless scrolling through apps is rarely inspiring. At Club VHS, you choose with your hands, your eyes, and your gut. You flip, you doubt, you discover. And you find exactly the film you didn’t know you needed.

Expect forgotten European treasures, Dutch nostalgia, cult classics, weird documentaries, early CGI experiments, and other raw little jewels. No algorithm. No “Top 10 Today.” Just films. And yes — you can rent a DVD player, too.

How it works

Rent DVDs starting at just €2.50 (+ €5 deposit). Members of Club VHS (via Substack) get extra perks, like a free fourth DVD when you rent three, or even unlimited rentals for €6 a month. And yes, you’ll get your deposit back when you return your DVDs safely.

Grand Opening: Thursday 14 August

We’re kicking things off with a celebratory film night. What we’re screening? Still a secret. But count on a special outdoor showing, under the stars, with drinks and a warm, retro videostore vibe.

20:00 – Doors open + welcome drink
20:15 – Make your own Club VHS membership card
21:00 – Official opening & first dive into the collection
22:00 – Film screening (in case of rain, we’ll move indoors to the Tuinhuis — limited to 30 seats)
