Residentie Spectrum TempestA
Multidisciplinary artist Federico Murgia and producer/sound engineer Lorenzo De Beris have residency Spectrum TempestA in Tolhuistuin
Federico and Lorenzo are working on the outdoor performance Spectrum TempestA in the Tuin van Tolhuistuin. The artists in residence study water-based atmospheric phenomena, such as a blizzard, hailstorm, rain shower or dense fog. This rainy period is therefore the perfect time for a residence in the Garden. The performance uses stroboscopic RGB lights and live sound recording/processing. RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue: the main colors of the additive color system. With these three colors millions of different colors of light can be formed.
The immersive performance aims to change the sensory perception of and cognitive response to the atmospheric phenomena. Thus we change our attitude towards what we usually do not pay attention to, or what we consider undesirable in everyday life.
The complete immersion in the natural elements is part of the multisensory illusion. It uses patterns generated by the weather. With this, the artists visually and acoustically transform and dissect the surrounding atmosphere in real time. The live manipulation sometimes gives the illusion of particularly turbulent or calm weather and on the other hand transforms the perception of the environment into a data-driven digital storm.
About the artists
Federico Murgia (1989) is an Italian multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Haarlem/Amsterdam. Through installations, drawings and sculptures, Federico explores the different aspects of sound, light and movement with noise as the leading subject in all his works.
Recently, he has been working with designers, musicians and especially with Maurizio Martinucci (TeZ) at Optofonica, an art/science laboratory located in Tolhuistuin.
Optofonica is an international platform where the relationship between art, science and technology is explored. In 2009, the Optofonica lab in Amsterdam was opened to develop art that explores the relationship between global phenomena (waves in the form of light, sound and chemical reactions) and the human senses. In the Optofonica Lab, new strategies are being developed that connect different domains of knowledge and implementation, including anthropology and ecology. Read more about Optofonica.
