On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Drs. Mireille Liong, advocate for equal hair rights, author and photographer, presents her new lecture De Ketenen van Haaruitval (The Shakles of Hair Loss).
The lecture is realized in collaboration with NiNsee, the National Institute for the Study of Dutch Slavery and its Legacy, and the timing is deliberate. One week before Keti Koti, Liong delves deeper into the connection between the legacy of slavery, colonial beauty standards, and the disproportionate hair loss among women of African descent.
The founder of kroeshaar.com, the very first hair website in the Netherlands, demonstrates how connections that are often ignored in daily life can be confronting while at the same time contributing to awareness, recognition, and healing.
Liong is the driving force behind BAD Hair Uprooted, an internationally touring exhibition and public education platform connecting hair loss to historically unequal hair rights. In 2020 she testified before the New York City Commission on Human Rights in support of the CROWN Act. In 2024 she was honored with the Certificate of Recognition from the City of New York.
