Klimaatbankje: What are we waiting for?
The Climate Bank of Climate Museum
When do we take action to address the climate crisis? Do we wait until the water is literally at our lips, or do we make sure we keep our feet dry? A park bench on the IJ reminds us of this pressing issue in a playful yet confrontational way. The bench shows how high we should sit if the earth continues to warm and water levels continue to rise. The perfect place to reflect on this challenge.
Re-use
The park bench, which originally lay decaying in a municipality workshop, is a great example of upcycling. Together with Amsterdam Street Art, it was transformed into a powerful installation called What are we waiting for? This project was part of Klimaat Op Straat and invites passersby to think about climate change in an approachable way. Countless people climb onto the bench daily, making the climate crisis tangible and visible. Have you taken a seat yet?
Background
The inspiration for this elevated bench comes from Denmark, where public broadcaster TV2 launched the campaign Our Earth, Our Responsibility. Similar benches have been placed throughout Copenhagen to create awareness about rising sea levels.
At its current location on the IJ in Amsterdam, the bench symbolizes a water level rise of 1.5 meters, which could become a reality there in the event of a flood. Want to know how high the water can get to you? Visit the website overstroomik.nl and find out for yourself.
So let's ask ourselves: what are we waiting for?
