Discover Amsterdam North on foot during the GardenTrail walking day, organized by the Garden Parks of North in collaboration with Tolhuistuin. This series of walking and listening tours offers a fresh perspective on the city. During these tours, explore the beautiful nature, both known and hidden places, in the parks and gardens of Amsterdam Noord. Discover the value of green in a special way. Will you join us?
There are three routes available: a kids route of 2 km, a rural route of 12 km and an urban route of 13 km. You can combine the routes perfectly for a long walk of 25 km. The two walking routes with (listening) stories can always be walked for free at www.tuintrail.amsterdam. On the walking day, paper walking maps will be handed out for free!
• Route 12 km - Through rural greenery - starting point: Tuinpark Rust & Vreugd
This route through the six northern garden parks is based on the Volkstuinroute Boven IJ, which was already walked in 2006. Discover the many ways gardeners are increasing biodiversity in their parks and making the city a little more climate resilient. Step into a green world full of stacking walls, butterfly and insect gardens, wadis, toad pools and natural ponds, food forests and branchwalls. During the walk, listen to the passionate gardeners and their stories. Charge your phone, put on your walking shoes and go!
- Starting point of the 12km walk is at Rust & Vreugd: Paterslaan 10, 1023 NZ Amsterdam.
- Pick up map and starting ticket between 12h and 13h
• Route 13 km - Through urban greenery - starting point: Tolhuistuin
Listen to various speakers while walking this route. Get inspired by Arnold van der Valk who talks about the Food Park on IJplein. And wander through the Vliegenbos with city ecologist Melvin Stigter to learn about ecological forest management, native plants and trees. What birds do you hear there and what insects do you see? What is the use of branchwalls and fallen trees for nature? The route goes via Voedseltuin IJplein, the Moestuinschool, the Noorderpark, Tuinpark Buitenzorg, the Vliegenbos and will connect to the rural garden parks via the Nieuwendammerdijk.
- Starting point of the 13km walk is at Tolhuistuin in the garden: Tolhuisweg 3, 1031 CL Amsterdam.
- Pick up map and start ticket between 9am and 10am.
• Combine the routes (12+13km) for a long 25km walk
During the Garden Trail Hiking Day, you don't have to choose! The 12 km and 13 km routes are perfect to combine for a 25 km walk. By starting at Tolhuistuin for the 13 km urban route and then continuing along the 12 km rural route that starts at Tuinpark Rust & Vreugd, you can seamlessly connect the two routes. In this way you not only enjoy the diversity of both urban and rural landscapes, but also experience a complete walking experience through Amsterdam North. We provide plenty of rest stops and opportunities to refuel with refreshments and inspiring conversations along the way. Put on your walking shoes and pick up your free route maps!
