Countering violence through music education
Musicians Without Borders invites you to join them for the second of four meet-ups in the Tolhuistuin, to explore how music can make a life-changing difference for people affected by war and armed conflict, how music can be an agent for inclusion and social change, and to reflect on a deeper commitment to systemic change through the arts.
The evening starts with a presentation by trainers Otto de Jong and Amanda Koser-Gillespie, telling the story of Soy Música and how the project turned into a movement in El Salvador. Afterwards, the floor will be open to the audience for an interactive discussion, moderated by Otto.
Otto de Jong is a choir and orchestra conductor specialized in working with large groups of children. His music workshops, lessons and rehearsals demonstrate the power of nonverbal communication and team building. Otto is a trainer and head of training development for Musicians Without Borders.
Amanda Koser-Gillespie is a music educator, ethnomusicologist, professional instrumentalist and trainer. She is the founder and director of Second Line N.I., a community jazz education and performance charity creating new models of shared music in shared spaces throughout Northern Ireland. Amanda is a trainer and curriculum developer for Musicians Without Borders.
