BLOODY BEAUTIFUL returns to Amsterdam on 18 September 2024 with a
one-of-a-kind Gossip Session. Our Gossip Sessions are interactive
gatherings where we share knowledge and exchange ideas. It is based on
the old feminist practice of gossip, where gossip is considered a
powerful tool for knowledge sharing. In this session we will be
exploring how cultural myths, bias and stereotyping about menopause are
sustained by popular culture.
What to expect in this Gossip Session….
You spoke and we listened! We are excited to present the
results of our recent Bloody Beautiful menopause survey done in
collaboration with the brilliant minds of Opinium. Head of Opinium
Amsterdam, Emily Dickinson, will explain how we surveyed Dutch society
to gather a much-needed understanding of the feelings, attitudes and
beliefs towards menopause. Part of the survey looked at the
representation of menopausal people by media, film and everyday
conversations at home and in the workplace. The evening will also
include a selection of sometimes hilarious (sometimes infuriating) film
clips, curated by affect lab’s Juliette Brederode, critically reflecting
on how menopause is portrayed in mainstream film.
We are keeping this session cosy with only limited seats, so book your spot soon, we would LOVE to see you there.
The evening will be moderated by affect lab Director, Dr. Natalie Dixon and the survey results will be presented by Opinium. Film selection presented by Juliette Brederode.
About menopause in the Netherlands:
Menopause
is still a vastly under-researched and overlooked topic in The
Netherlands – we want to change this! The results of the Bloody
Beautiful nationally representative menopause survey contributes a
clearer picture of how menopause culture takes shape.
Previous studies show….

-
According to the RIVM: 1 in 3 working women in the Netherlands
experience health issues related to menopause. 48% of these women cannot
talk to their manager about this.
