Once there stood a House - Anne Leijdekkers

Op de deurmat ligt een brief van de overheid. Daarin lees je over een aankondiging dat je huis binnen bepaalde tijd moet worden afgebroken om ruimte te geven aan het water. Wat gebeurt er dan? Je vraagt je af of je huis nog in staat is om je te beschermen. Is deze aankondiging niet wat overdreven? Het project 'Once there stood a house' verkent op multidisciplinaire wijze hoe we zouden reageren op de vraag om ruimte te maken voor iets wat zich buitenshuis afspeelt.

Er ligt een grote taak in het bouwen van nieuwe huizen. En hoewel we ons als welvarend land nog kunnen verdedigen met het ophogen van dijken, is het tegelijkertijd nodig om ons een toekomst voor te stellen waarin vertrekken door terugkerend wateroverlast een scenario is. Wat als je huis daarvoor uit voorzorg al wordt afgebroken? Dit zou voor de gemiddelde Nederlander een onvoorstelbare onderbreking van de gang van zaken zijn.

Deze theatrale ervaring is een eerste kennismaking met een langlopend en nomadisch onderzoek en project. Samen met verschillende samenwerkingspartners (o.a. StrandLab en Het Watersnoodmuseum) en burgers zal Anne Leijdekkers een collectief afbreekritueel vormgeven, die in verschillende maatschappelijke contexten ingezet en ervaren kan worden. Met het aanreiken van het afbreekritueel wilt Anne de stand van zaken bevragen. Het is pure nieuwsgierigheid; hoe reageert Nederland op het voorstel van een afbreekritueel?

Deze kunstinstallatie is gerealiseerd in samenwerking met Het Watersnoodmuseum, StrandLab, Collectief Walden, en mede gefinancierd door Stimuleringsfonds.

On the doormat is a letter from the government. In it you read about an announcement that your house must be demolished within a certain time to give way to the water. What happens next? You wonder if your house is still able to protect you. Isn't this announcement a bit excessive? The project “Once there stood a house” explores in a multidisciplinary way how we would respond to the demand to make space for something outdoors.

There is a big task in building new homes. And while as a prosperous country we can still defend ourselves by raising dikes, at the same time it is necessary to imagine a future where leaving due to recurring flooding is a scenario. What if your house is already demolished as a precaution before that? This would be an unimaginable interruption of the course of events for the average Dutchman.

This theatrical experience is a first introduction to a long-term and nomadic research and project. Together with various collaborative partners (including StrandLab and Het Watersnoodmuseum) and citizens, Anne Leijdekkers will shape a collective hyphenation ritual that can be used and experienced in different social contexts. By presenting the hyphenation ritual, Anne wants to question the state of affairs. It is pure curiosity; how does the Netherlands react to the proposal of a hyphenation ritual?
