Come and sing at Tolhuistuin Amsterdam every third Monday of the month! Experience the joy of simply singing: for yourself, for the group you are a part of and for a good cause. You do not need any experience to participate. You don’t need to know the songs, how to read sheet music or know about certain genres- everyone who likes to sing is welcome to join the vocal circle. The evenings are led by Nicoline Snaas, who has years of experience as a singer, teacher, workshop leader and conductor.
For a good cause
During those evenings we are singing for Musicians Without Borders. All proceeds support MWB’s projects bringing music to people in conflict regions around the world. Choose your own ticket price/ donation at € 5, € 7.50, € 10 or € 15. –.
About Musicians Without Borders
Musicians Without Borders uses the power of music for peacebuilding and social change. The foundation has been working for the past 23 years with people affected by war and conflict, with music programs that bring connection and help build community. MWB empowers musicians all over the world to make a difference in their own environment. Each Vocal Circle evening we will feature a different project.
What are vocal circles?
Vocal circles were popularized by Bobby McFerrin (You probably know him from 'Don't Worry, Be Happy'); a vocal circle brings a group of people together to sing without needing prior training or knowledge. We form a circle with the leader in the middle. The workshop leader provides the first part of the circle with an improvised piece to sing, and builds on that with different parts until the entire cycle sings in harmony. Afterwards the group can start improvising by changing or adding pieces, leading to new experiments and surprising results. Nicoline is inspired by world music songs and uses canons as well, so the singing can be both free and structured.

This evening’s project focus:: Welcome Notes
Around the world, wars and armed violence, climate devastation and poverty have resulted in a staggering number of displaced people.
Welcome Notes is Musicians Without Borders’ response to the arrival in Europe of people seeking safety from war, poverty and climate change. We began by training musicians in the Netherlands to work with vulnerable people in asylum centers, but soon expanded to include training and pilot projects in Germany, Italy, Greece and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
